The ultimate road map

Psalm 119:19a says this: “I am a stranger in the earth”.  As I read it, I thought, yes, I am stranger than most people, but, this is not what the writer of the psalm meant.

I really like how the NASB Life Application Study Bible footnote explained it so I wanted to share it with you.

The psalmist says that he is a “a stranger in the earth,” and so he needed guidance.  Almost any long trip requires a map or guide.  As we travel through life, the Bible should be our road map, pointing out safe routes, obstacles to avoid, and our final destination.  We must recognize ourselves as pilgrims, travelers here on earth who study God’s map to learn the way.  If we ignore the map, we will wander aimlessly through life and risk missing our real destination.

Yesterday, my husband and I took a trip that we have made before, but all I remembered was the major roads, the fine points I had forgotten.  So I used the Garmin and we were able to get there without a problem.  The Garmin pointed the way, just like the Bible does.

What are we using for our guidance system to get through this life? Family, friends, radio shows, TV self help shows?  All of these are wonderful, but I believe the Bible was given to us as the ultimate road map.  When we consult the truth in scripture, we will never need to question if we are going to the right direction.  We will always be heading towards the LORD.

I once heard the Word is like our owner’s manual for our life on earth…. explains everything we need to know for proper use and maintenance! Thanks for another blessing!

  6. Amen! And so many people, let alone Christians, don’t even realize how much wisdom and practical things for living life on the earth can be found in the Bible. I have often heard, “That’s in the Bible?”

    • I know. It is a real sad commentary for a book that has been around as long as the Bible, most people have no clue what is in it. It is sitting on their coffee table, but we just never pick it up to read it. Thanks for your comment! Have a great evening. 🙂

  7. Hey! I don’t know that I’ve had an opportunity to read many articles that are teachings. This was really good.

Never thought about being a traveler in a foreign land…thus needing a map in order to navigate. Great point!

    Love ya! 🙂

    • Thanks! That is why I absolutely love the “life application” type of study bible, it applies every verse of scripture to our lives today. It makes it a lot easier for slow learners like me! Point me in the right direction and I can follow!
